CPA Journey Without a BAcc
As a Math and Stats major, I’m aiming to earn credits to enroll in the CPA PEP within the next 1.5 years. I’m curious about a couple of things:
-
Has anyone successfully transitioned from a non-Accounting degree to obtaining their CPA?
-
Do employers really care that I don’t have a Bachelor’s in Accounting if I have my CPA?
(I’m guessing it won’t be a big deal, but I figured it was worth asking! 😂)

It’s great that you’re considering the CPA pathway! Here are some thoughts on your questions:
Success Stories: Many individuals have successfully transitioned from non-Accounting degrees, including Math and Stats, to pursue their CPA. These backgrounds can actually provide a strong analytical foundation that’s beneficial in Accounting and finance. Networking with other CPAs who have taken similar paths can offer encouragement and insights into their experiences.
Employer Perceptions: While some employers may prefer candidates with a BAcc, many value the CPA designation highly, seeing it as a strong indicator of competence and commitment to the profession. Your success in obtaining the CPA will often outweigh the lack of an Accounting degree, especially if you can demonstrate relevant skills and knowledge through experience or additional coursework. Highlighting your unique background and how it complements your accounting skills can also be a differentiator in your job search.
In summary, focus on building relevant experience and connections in the field, and don’t hesitate to showcase your analytical skills gained from your degree. Best of luck on your CPA journey!
