Could an old arrest keep me from sitting for the CPA exams?

Navigating the CPA Exam Application Process: Insights on Past Arrests

Hello, readers!

I hope this post finds you well. Today, I want to share a personal situation and seek guidance from those who might have faced similar challenges.

Approximately seven years ago, I went through a difficult period marked by a significant mental health episode, which unfortunately resulted in an arrest for trespassing. While the incident escalated to law enforcement involvement, it ultimately concluded with all charges being dismissed prior to any court hearing. Importantly, I was never convicted, and the sole blemish on my record is this arrest—not counting a minor speeding ticket from about three years ago.

Currently, I am in the process of pursuing expungement, which I understand can take quite some time. However, my ambition is to begin my journey toward becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in Texas, and I’d prefer not to delay my career aspirations any further.

As part of the application process, I recognize that I will need to disclose my past arrest. My commitment to transparency is important to me, but I find myself concerned about how the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy might respond to my disclosure. Even though the incident was related to a mental health crisis and resulted in no conviction, I am anxious about the possibility that this could hinder my eligibility to sit for the CPA exam.

If anyone has navigated a similar circumstance or can shed light on the Board’s perspective regarding such situations, your insights would be invaluable. In particular, I am eager to understand how past arrests, especially those that were dismissed, are evaluated in the context of CPA applications.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post. Any advice, personal experiences, or resources you could share would be incredibly helpful as I continue to work toward this next step in my career. Your support means a great deal to me as I strive to move forward.

Warm regards!
