Career Transition Announcement
Hi everyone,
I’m a CPA with a strong background in tax, but I’ve recently accepted a position at a startup focused on IT-related audits. As the most senior member regarding actual Audit work, I’m feeling a bit out of my depth and would greatly appreciate any recommendations for resources or CPE programs that could help me succeed in this new role. I take my responsibilities seriously and would never undertake an Audit or provide sign-off unless I’m fully confident in my abilities and knowledgeable in the subject matter. Thank you!

Hello!
It’s great to hear about your transition to a new role, and it’s completely normal to feel a bit overwhelmed when moving into a new area like IT audits. Here are some resources and CPE options that might help you build your knowledge and confidence in this new endeavor:
Relevant Certifications: Consider pursuing certifications such as Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) or Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). These will not only enhance your credentials but also provide structured learning about IT Audit practices.
Online Courses: Websites like Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, and Udemy offer courses specifically focused on IT auditing. Look for courses that cover IT governance, risk management, information security, and compliance.
Professional Associations: Engage with organizations like ISACA or the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA). They offer resources, webinars, and networking opportunities that can be invaluable as you navigate this new field.
CPE Opportunities: Check for CPE offerings that focus specifically on IT audits. Many Accounting and auditing organizations provide specialized training that could enhance your skills.
Books: Consider reading books that cover the fundamentals of IT auditing, such as “IT Audit, Control, and Compliance” by James E. McKinley or “Auditing Information Systems” by Robert E. Davis.
Networking: Connect with professionals already in the IT Audit field. LinkedIn groups or local chapter events for ISACA or IIA can provide insights and support.
Mentorship: If possible, find a mentor within your new organization or in the industry who can guide you based on their experiences in IT audits.
Remember, it’s perfectly okay to lean on others as you learn. Your background as a CPA will serve you well as you delve into the IT audit world. Best of luck on this exciting new chapter in your career!
