Career Change?

Considering a Career Change?

I’m looking to transition into auditing but am unsure how to do so without prior experience. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from a four-year university, but I’ve been out of school since 2015. Going back to school while working full-time and managing my finances has proven difficult.

Recently, I interviewed for an internal Audit position at my current job, but unfortunately, I wasn’t selected as they opted for a candidate with more direct experience. This was disappointing since I was really eager to make this change. It has made me realize that breaking into a new career can be challenging without experience. While I don’t aspire to work for one of the Big Four firms, I believe that auditing aligns well with my skills and work ethic.

To further my qualifications, I’ve enrolled in an advanced Accounting class online this semester to work towards obtaining my CPA. However, it’s been a frustrating experience; the professor doesn’t provide much guidance, and I wasn’t aware that there are no live lectures or meetings for online courses. Although the material itself isn’t overly difficult, I’ve struggled to grasp when to apply various concepts, such as fair value, book value, controlling interest, and premiums.

I’d love to hear from anyone who has successfully transitioned into auditing from another area of Accounting. How did you navigate your career change? Is further education necessary, or is being a CPA a requirement to become an auditor? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

  1. It’s great that you’re looking to make a career change into auditing, especially since you have a solid foundation with your Accounting degree. Transitioning into a new field can be challenging, but there are several paths you can explore that might help you bridge the gap without extensive experience.

    1. Leverage Your Current Role: While you may not have been selected for the internal Audit role, consider seeking opportunities within your current job to get involved in projects related to auditing or compliance. Express your interest to your manager and ask if you can assist in any audit-related tasks, even if they are minor. This experience can bolster your resume and show your initiative.

    2. Networking: Connect with professionals already working in auditing. Attend industry events, webinars, or local Accounting organizations where you can meet auditors. Informational interviews can be valuable—they provide insight into their experiences and may help you learn about potential job openings in the field.

    3. Certifications: While a CPA is highly regarded in the Accounting field, it’s not strictly necessary for all auditing jobs. Consider pursuing other certifications that focus specifically on auditing, such as Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) or Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA), depending on your interests. They can also demonstrate your commitment to the field.

    4. Online Resources and Study Groups: If you’re struggling with your current online class, see if there are supplemental resources available—such as online forums, YouTube tutorials, or study groups. Engaging with peers can provide different perspectives on the material.

    5. Entry-Level Positions: Sometimes, starting with an entry-level position in auditing can be more beneficial than aiming straight for internal Audit roles. Look for roles like auditing assistants or compliance roles that can provide you with relevant experience.

    6. Stay Persistent: Many people have successfully transitioned into auditing from different areas of accounting or finance—it might take time, but your determination to learn and shift your career will pay off in the end.

Remember, every small step you take toward building your auditing knowledge and skills will make a difference. Keep pursuing your passion, and don’t hesitate to ask for help and guidance along the way! Good luck!
