Career Change

Career Transition Opportunity

Hi everyone,

I’m a CPA with a background primarily in taxation, and I’ve recently accepted a position at a startup focused on conducting IT-related audits. In this role, I’ll be the most senior team member with respect to actual auditing experience, and I must admit I’m feeling a bit out of my depth. I would greatly appreciate any recommendations for resources or Continuing Professional Education (CPE) that could help me succeed in this new venture.

I pride myself on being diligent and will only undertake audits or approve them if I feel fully competent and well-prepared in the relevant areas. Thank you for your support!

  1. Hi there,

Congratulations on your new opportunity! Transitioning from tax to IT-related audits can feel daunting, but it’s also an exciting chance to expand your skill set and grow in your career. Here are some resources and tips that might help you navigate this change successfully:

    1. Certifications: Consider pursuing relevant certifications such as Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) or Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). These credentials can provide a solid foundation in IT auditing principles.

    2. Online Courses: Websites like Coursera, Udemy, and LinkedIn Learning offer courses specifically tailored to IT Audit topics. Look for courses that cover risk assessment, IT controls, cybersecurity, and compliance frameworks (like COBIT or NIST).

    3. Professional Organizations: Joining organizations like ISACA or the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) can provide networking opportunities, resources, and access to webinars or workshops focused on IT auditing.

    4. Books and Literature: Look for books on IT auditing practices. Some recommendations include “IT Audit, Control, and Security” by Fred Cohen and “Information Technology Auditing” by James A. Hall.

    5. Networking: Connect with other IT auditors and professionals in the field. LinkedIn groups and local meetups can provide valuable insights and support from those who have made similar transitions.

    6. Mentorship: If possible, seek out a mentor within the startup or your professional network who has experience in IT audits. Their guidance can be invaluable as you navigate new challenges.

    7. Practical Experience: Try to get involved in audits as much as you can. Hands-on experience is often the best way to learn. Shadowing someone with more experience during audits can also be beneficial.

    8. Stay Current: The IT landscape is always evolving. Make it a habit to stay updated with the latest trends, tools, and regulations in IT auditing.

Remember, it’s normal to feel lost in a new area, but your CPA background provides a strong analytical foundation to build upon. Take your time, be proactive in your learning, and don’t hesitate to ask questions as you transition into this new role. Best of luck!

    Best,
