Career Transition

Hi everyone,

I’m a CPA with a background exclusively in tax, but I’ve recently been offered a chance to join a startup focused on IT-related audits. In this role, I would be the most senior member responsible for conducting audits, which has left me feeling a bit uncertain. I would greatly appreciate any recommendations for resources or continuing professional education (CPE) that could help me succeed in this new venture. I am committed to ensuring I am fully competent before taking on Audit responsibilities, and I won’t sign off on any work unless I’m confident in my abilities. Thank you for your help!

  1. Hello!

First off, congratulations on the new opportunity! Transitioning into IT-related audits can be a rewarding challenge, and it’s great to see that you’re committed to ensuring your competence in this area.

Here are some resources and tips that might help you along your journey:

    1. CPE Courses: Look for CPE courses specifically focused on IT auditing. Organizations like the ISACA and the IIA offer various training programs and certifications that cover the fundamental concepts of IT Audit. The Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) certification could be particularly beneficial.

    2. Books: There are several excellent books on IT auditing and risk management. Some recommendations include:

    3. “IT Auditing: Using Controls to Protect Information Assets” by Chris Davis
    4. “Auditing Information Systems” by Michael G. D. G. Tharakan and Brian N. M. Avery
    5. “IT Audit, Control, and Security” by Robert R. Moeller

    6. Online Courses: Platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and LinkedIn Learning offer courses in IT auditing, cybersecurity, and risk management that could enhance your understanding and provide practical skills.

    7. Professional Associations: Joining associations such as ISACA, the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA), or the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) can grant you access to valuable resources, networking opportunities, and webinars that focus on the latest trends and techniques in IT auditing.

    8. Mentorship: If possible, seek out a mentor who has experience in IT Audit or risk management. They can provide guidance, share insights, and help you navigate your new role.

    9. Hands-On Experience: Try to get involved in any hands-on projects or case studies within your startup. Practical experience is invaluable. Even if it means starting with smaller tasks, it’ll help you build your confidence.

    10. Stay Updated: The field of IT auditing is rapidly evolving, especially with advancements in technology. Follow industry blogs, podcasts, and forums to stay current on new methodologies and best practices.

Remember, it’s perfectly normal to feel a bit lost initially, but with the right resources and a proactive approach, you’ll build the knowledge and skills needed to excel in this new role. Best of luck on your journey! You’ve got this!
