Seeking Career Guidance: Transitioning to Accounting While Working – Where Should I Direct My Efforts?
Hello everyone,
I’m reaching out for advice on how to successfully pivot into a career in tax or Audit while juggling a full-time job. I hold a B.A. in Business Administration and have four years of experience in financial and retirement plan services. Currently, I’m nearing the completion of my B.A. in Accounting with the intention of obtaining my CPA, but I’m finding it challenging to secure a job that offers comparable pay (~$70k+) and provides the necessary Accounting experience for the exam.
So far, I’ve maintained a straight-A record in my accounting courses, which include:
– Federal Income Tax
– Accounting Information Systems
– Corporate Finance
– Cost Accounting (currently in progress)
Upcoming courses:
– Intermediate Accounting 1 & 2
– Advanced Accounting
– Auditing
With my background in mind, what areas should I be concentrating on? Should I consider entering public accounting at a lower salary, explore opportunities in industry, or take a different approach altogether? I would truly appreciate any insights on networking, job search techniques, or alternative paths to fulfill the CPA experience requirements.
Thank you in advance for your support!

Hi there!
It’s great to hear about your dedication and progress in your Accounting journey. Transitioning to Accounting while working full-time can definitely be challenging, but with a strategic approach, you can position yourself effectively. Here are some suggestions for your consideration:
Leverage Your Current Skills: Since you have a background in financial services, highlight your experience with financial reporting, compliance, and any Bookkeeping tasks. Many Accounting firms value candidates who understand financial products and services.
Network within the Industry: Start reaching out to professionals in your desired fields (tax or audit) through platforms like LinkedIn. Join relevant accounting groups and associations, such as the AICPA or local CPA societies. Attend industry events and webinars to connect with potential mentors or job leads.
Internships or Part-time Positions: Even if it means starting at a lower salary, an internship or part-time position in public accounting can provide you with the necessary experience. Look for firms that have a culture of supporting those in transition. Some firms might offer flexible hours to accommodate your full-time job.
Focus on Certifications/Skills: In addition to your CPA aspirations, consider obtaining a relevant certification (like the Enrolled Agent or even a specialization in tax) that can enhance your qualifications and make you more attractive to potential employers.
Consider Industry Roles: If public accounting opportunities are limited, explore accounting roles in industry. Many companies value CPA candidates for in-house accounting and finance positions that can help you gain practical experience while still working toward your certification.
Tailor Your Resume and LinkedIn: Make sure your resume reflects your relevant coursework, skills, and any accounting-related tasks from your current role. Highlight your strong academic performance and any projects that showcase your accounting knowledge.
Utilize University Resources: Don’t forget to tap into your university’s career services. They might have job postings, connections with local firms, or even alumni who could help with your job search.
Consider Projects and Freelance Work: If you’re able to, taking on freelance accounting or Bookkeeping work can help you gain hands-on experience and build your portfolio.
Research Local Firms: Some smaller firms might be more willing to hire someone transitioning into accounting and provide the exposure you need.
Remember, patience and persistence are key. The accounting field can be competitive, but with your strong academic performance and relevant experience, you’re well on your way. Best of luck with your transition, and don’t hesitate to reach out to others in the field for additional support!
