Seeking Career Advice

Hello everyone,

I recently transitioned from Big 4 after two years and have received two job offers from different firms in the APAC region. I’m looking for some guidance on which opportunity to choose, especially since I place a high value on flexibility.

1. Crypto Exchange:
This position focuses on internal controls and SoX reporting, including tasks such as documentation improvement and internal Audit testing. The team is small and relatively new, consisting of just myself (a senior associate) and a manager. They offer a three-day work-from-home policy, which I highly appreciate. I’m also passionate about the crypto industry. The company is in the process of acquiring a regulatory license in the region and is expected to receive it soon. However, they have experienced layoffs during the crypto winter, though I’m uncertain if this would impact my team.

2. Hedge Fund:
In this role, I would be working as a fund accountant, handling tasks like NAV calculations, monthly closings, and various ad hoc responsibilities. I don’t have much background in fund Accounting, and the fund is growing rapidly (with assets under management estimated at $5-10 billion). A new Accounting system will be implemented soon, which may lead to longer hours in the near future.

Compensation and Benefits:
The hedge fund offer includes a slightly higher base salary (about $1,000 more per month), with a performance-based bonus expected to be equivalent to a few months’ salary. Other benefits, such as pension contributions and annual leave, are similar between both positions.

I need to make a decision by Monday, so I would greatly appreciate any insights or advice you might have. Thank you!

  1. It sounds like you have two interesting offers with distinct advantages and challenges. Here are a few considerations to help you make your decision:

    1. Flexibility: Since flexibility is a significant priority for you, the crypto exchange job with a 3-day work-from-home policy seems to align well with your values. In contrast, the hedge fund’s new Accounting system implementation suggests longer hours might be the norm, which could limit your flexibility.

    2. Industry Passion: You mentioned a passion for the crypto industry. If this is a strong factor for you, the opportunity at the crypto exchange could be more fulfilling in the long run. Enjoying what you do can lead to greater job satisfaction and career longevity.

    3. Job Stability: The hedge fund appears to be growing rapidly, which could indicate job security and career growth potential. However, consider the volatility in the crypto market and the company’s past layoffs. If you choose the crypto exchange, research how solid the company’s financials are now and how they plan to mitigate future risks.

    4. Career Development: Consider where you want to be in the next few years. The hedge fund might provide more traditional finance experience that could be beneficial if you decide to pursue a career in fund management or a similar path. On the other hand, the crypto position could position you well in the rapidly evolving digital asset space, which might open up unique opportunities in the future.

    5. Compensation: While the hedge fund offers slightly higher pay and the potential for bonuses, weigh this against the value of flexibility and work-life balance. Often, lower stress and a better work environment can outweigh a small increase in salary.

    6. Team Structure and Culture: The small team at the crypto exchange may foster closer collaboration and the chance to make a significant impact in shaping internal controls. Conversely, the hedge fund may offer a more structured environment with potentially more resources available.

Ultimately, think about where you see yourself thriving based on your values and career aspirations. Good luck with your decision!
