Can I secure an articleship with one of the Big 4/6/10 firms if I pass my intermediate exams in three attempts?
I attempted Group 1 for the first time in January 2025 but unfortunately didn’t succeed. I take full responsibility for my failure—I didn’t dedicate enough time to studying during the preparation period and didn’t practice as much as I should have. However, I’m gearing up for my second attempt at Group 1 in May 2025, and I feel confident this time since I’ve completed the syllabus and am actively practicing. I’m also planning to take my third attempt at Group 2 in September 2025 with the goal of passing.
Given this situation, do I still have a chance of landing an articleship at one of the major firms?
One response
Yes, you can still land an articleship in the Big 4 or other major firms even if you clear your inter in 3 attempts. While clearing your exams in fewer attempts can be an advantage and is often preferred by these firms, they also take into consideration other factors such as your overall performance, your skills, work experience, and your willingness to learn and grow.
Here are a few tips to strengthen your application:
Focus on Your Performance: Make sure to perform well in your upcoming attempts. Clear both groups with good marks to show your mastery of the subject.
Enhance Your Skill Set: While preparing for your exams, consider acquiring additional skills that are in demand, such as knowledge of Accounting Software, data analysis, or soft skills like communication and teamwork.
Internships and Practical Experience: If possible, seek internships or related experience during your preparation time. This can demonstrate your commitment and willingness to gain hands-on experience in the field.
Networking: Connect with professionals in the industry, attend seminars and workshops, and engage in relevant student organizations. Networking can open doors for opportunities and provide valuable insights into the selection process.
Prepare a Strong Resume: Highlight your strengths, skills, internships, and any additional courses you’ve taken up. A well-structured resume can leave a positive impression on recruiters.
Be Honest and Positive: If you get the opportunity for interviews, be honest about your journey and showcase how you’ve learned from your experiences. A positive attitude and a growth mindset can be very appealing to employers.
Remember, many successful professionals faced challenges on their path. Persistence and a proactive approach will go a long way in helping you achieve your goal of landing an articleship with a top firm. Good luck!
