Being a senior in tax low key sucks

Being a senior in tax can be really tough. I struggled through my first two years in public Accounting, but I worked hard every day to improve. Now, I find myself constantly hounded by various managers for state extensions, which can be pretty technically challenging. Honestly, it’s exhausting (just to clarify, I focus on federal taxes and work with pass-throughs, so state taxes aren’t usually my forte in this office).

Back when I was an associate, management barely noticed me during extension week, likely because I wasn’t particularly helpful. It’s frustrating to realize how things have shifted.

I wanted to improve and not be considered ineffective, so I should feel proud, right? But the hardest part is seeing other seniors who have already wrapped up their 3/15 or 3/17 work, and they’re in similar positions as I am. I’m just ready for it to be over—less than a week left, everyone!

  1. I totally get where you’re coming from. Transitioning from an associate to a senior can be rough, especially when you’re juggling high expectations and technical responsibilities like state extensions. It sounds like you’ve put in a lot of effort to improve, and it’s frustrating when that hard work doesn’t seem to translate into less stress, especially during crunch time.

It’s great to hear you’ve progressed and become more valuable, but it can feel overwhelming when you’re surrounded by colleagues who appear to be in a more comfortable position. Just remember, everyone has their own struggles, even if they don’t show it.

Hang in there! You’re almost through this busy season, and you have the skills to tackle the challenges ahead. Once it’s over, take some time to celebrate your growth and reflect on how far you’ve come. You got this!
