Being a senior in tax is honestly pretty rough. I struggled during my first couple of years in public Accounting and worked hard to improve every day. Now, I find myself constantly chased by various managers for state extensions, which definitely requires some technical know-how. And wow, this situation is just overwhelming (I’m focused on federal work, and I handle passthroughs, which isn’t usually the case for my specific office in SALT).
When I was an associate, management mostly overlooked me during extension week, probably because I wasn’t very helpful back then. It’s frustrating.
I finally achieved my goal of becoming competent, so I should feel satisfied, right? The worst part is seeing other seniors who have already completed their 3/15 or 3/17 work, and they’re in the same private company coding as I am. I’m really over this. Just a little under a week left, everyone!

It sounds like you’re really feeling the pressure right now, and that’s completely understandable in the busy season. Transitioning to a senior role can come with its own set of challenges, especially when you start to feel the weight of expectations from management. It’s great to hear you’ve improved since your associate days, but it sounds like you’re still figuring out how to navigate these new responsibilities.
Remember, it’s okay to feel overwhelmed—many people in the industry can relate! You’re not alone in this, and it’s normal to find certain aspects of the job frustrating. Just keep pushing through; the finish line is in sight, and all your hard work will pay off. Maybe after this busy season, you can take some time to recharge and reflect on the progress you’ve made. Hang in there! You’ve got this!
