Associates of accouting at local cc vs. online bachelors out of state program

Choosing Between an Accounting Associate’s at a Local Community College vs. an Online Bachelor’s Out-of-State

Hi everyone,

I’m considering going back to school for Accounting and could use your advice. I previously enrolled in an online bachelor’s program at UALR but had to pause due to personal circumstances. I’m now ready to resume my education.

Currently, I work in human services for my local government, and I aspire to transition into an Accounting role there. My goal is ultimately to obtain a bachelor’s degree, but I’m torn between finishing the online program out of state or pursuing an associate degree at my local community college, which might offer better local connections.

What do you think would be the best route for me? I would really appreciate your insights! Thanks!

  1. It sounds like you’re at an important crossroads in your academic journey. Here are some considerations for each option:

    Completing the Online Bachelor’s Program:
Efficiency: If you’ve already started the program at UALR and have some credits, it might be more efficient to finish what you’ve started rather than starting over with an associate’s.
Focus on your goal: Since you want a bachelor’s degree ultimately, pursuing that directly could save you time, especially if you are able to take courses that align with your career goals immediately.
Flexibility: An online program may offer you more flexibility to balance work and study, especially since you are currently employed.

Pursuing an Associate’s Degree at Local CC:
Networking: Attending a local community college can help you build connections in your community which might be beneficial when you’re looking to pivot your career within local government.
Cost: An associate’s program at a community college might be more affordable, and you might be able to qualify for local scholarships or assistance programs.
Transfer Opportunities: Many community colleges have pathways to transfer to four-year institutions; you could potentially complete your associate’s and then transfer seamlessly to finish your bachelor’s, maximizing your local connections.

    Additional Considerations:
    – Consider reaching out to current professionals in Accounting roles within your local government to get their perspective. They may have insights on how much local connections matter versus the level of education.
    – Assess how both options align with your personal circumstances and long-term career goals.
    – Reflect on your previous experiences with the out-of-state program and how they impacted your academic journey—do they motivate you to continue, or do they suggest a change in strategy?

Ultimately, the best choice will depend on your personal priorities, circumstances, and long-term career goals. Good luck!
