Anyone else feel stupid?

Does anyone else ever feel this way?

I’ve been in Accounting for 8 years and have been designated for 4, but lately I’ve been feeling pretty foolish. I keep making mistakes that leave me feeling frustrated and embarrassed. For example, I just submitted a table to my manager and realized it was missing 7 rows of totals. Am I the only one who experiences this?

Sometimes I wonder if my brain operates differently from other accountants. I struggle to think at a higher level and often feel like I’m not measuring up.

  1. You’re definitely not alone in feeling this way! Many professionals, regardless of their experience level, have moments of self-doubt and make mistakes. Accounting is complex, and even the most seasoned accountants can have oversight from time to time. It’s important to remember that everyone makes errors; what matters is how you address them and learn from them.

Feeling like your brain doesn’t work at the same capacity as others can be tough, but it’s important to recognize that everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. Instead of focusing on what you perceive as shortcomings, try to focus on your successes and how far you’ve come in your career.

If you find that mistakes are becoming a pattern, it might be helpful to implement some systems to catch errors before submitting work, like checklists or peer reviews. And don’t hesitate to reach out for help or guidance when you’re unsure about something. You’re not alone in this journey, and it’s okay to ask for support!
