Title: Feeling Behind in finance Careers at 24 – Is There Hope?
24 years old and feeling behind in the world of finance careers. I have zero relevant internship experience, only one equity research role from a university club, and an average GPA. Currently finishing up my last semester of my MSc in finance.
I’m unsure whether to pursue a different career path or continue on in any type of finance role (not even considering IB).
All of my friends are excelling in their careers and I can’t help but feel like I’m falling miserably behind. Is there any way for me to make a comeback?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
One response
Am I screwed for life?
No, you are not screwed for life. It’s important to remember that everyone’s career path is unique and there are always opportunities to turn things around.
Evaluating your current situation
At 24 years old, with a MSc in finance and some relevant experience from a university club, you have a good foundation to build upon. While your friends may seem to be doing well, it’s essential to focus on your own journey and not compare yourself to others.
Assessing your options
Before making any decisions, take the time to evaluate your interests and strengths. Consider whether you are passionate about pursuing a career in finance or if there are other industries that align better with your goals.
Steps to bounce back
Networking: Reach out to professionals in the finance industry, attend networking events, and make connections that could lead to potential job opportunities.
Internships: Look for internships, even if they are unpaid, to gain relevant experience and build your resume.
Skill-building: Consider taking additional courses or certifications to enhance your skills and make yourself more marketable to potential employers.
Seek mentorship: Find a mentor within the finance industry who can provide guidance and advice on advancing your career.
Final thoughts
Remember that setbacks are a natural part of any career journey. With determination, hard work, and a proactive approach, there is always a way to bounce back and carve out a successful path for yourself. Stay focused on your goals and continue to pursue opportunities that align with your interests and values. Good luck!
