Title: Am I really that bad?
Context: My college requires me to have a co-op in order to graduate, and they have a rule where we must accept the first offer we receive. Unfortunately, I recently discovered that the position I accepted is unpaid, despite not being informed beforehand. I will be working 8 hours per day, Monday to Friday, from January to the end of April 2024.
During tax season, my boss has been pressuring me to work overtime every day this week, which I have consistently refused due to the unpaid nature of my co-op. Today, he accused me of being unprofessional and insisted that all accountants should work overtime during tax season. Am I in the wrong here? I believe I am, but how can I change my mindset and overcome the feeling of “why should I work overtime when I’m not being paid”?
Please feel free to be honest and direct in your feedback. I welcome any criticism as an opportunity for self-reflection.

It is important to first acknowledge that your feelings and concerns are valid. Working unpaid overtime during a co-op can indeed be frustrating and difficult to justify, especially considering the sacrifices you are already making by accepting an unpaid position. It is not unreasonable for you to feel hesitant about working extra hours without compensation.
In this situation, it is crucial to communicate openly and honestly with your boss. You can explain your concerns about working unpaid overtime, expressing that you value your time and effort and that you are already fulfilling your obligations as agreed upon in your co-op terms. It is important to set boundaries and advocate for yourself in a respectful manner.
It is also worth considering seeking advice from a career counselor or co-op advisor at your college. They may be able to provide guidance on how to navigate this situation and offer support in finding a resolution that is fair to both you and your employer.
Remember that your worth is not determined by your willingness to work unpaid overtime. It is important to prioritize your well-being and set boundaries that align with your values and beliefs. It may be helpful to reflect on your mindset and consider what changes you can make to navigate similar situations in the future. Your growth and self-awareness are key components of your personal and professional development.
