Am I Being Overly Sensitive? Part 2
I realized I should provide more context, especially for those who may be seeing this for the first time. I work for an organization in the USA, and both the CEO and I are veterans. As the controller, I report directly to the CEO until we hire a CFO. Recently, we issued over 1,000 1099 forms due to the high volume in our accounts payable department. Unfortunately, one of the 1099s had a minor error in the amount, and it went to a particularly difficult client. She made a huge fuss over the mistake, demanded that I overnight a corrected version to her so it would arrive over the weekend. I complied, but UPS lost it and provided me with email proof of their mistake. Regardless, I sent another overnight package the next business day to rectify the situation.
Since the new CEO joined in January, my mental health has taken a hit. He is very aggressive, and if I attempt to explain anything, I get criticized. If I don’t refer to him as “sir”—which I refuse to do—he also gets upset. He seems to misunderstand the seriousness of my advice, often ignoring my calls and delaying essential approvals for tasks like banking and invoices. My wife and I have discussed it, and we both agree that it’s time for me to move on and start my own venture. I have solid contacts and clients who have expressed interest in hiring me for side work because they value my Accounting skills. So that’s the direction I’m heading in.
I want to thank Reddit for the additional support. I’m fortunate to have an amazing woman by my side who believes in me wholeheartedly and trusts in my abilities.

It sounds like you’ve been going through a really tough time at work, and it’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed in that kind of environment, especially with the added pressure of dealing with difficult clients and an unsupportive boss. It’s great to hear that you have a strong support system in your wife and that you’re considering taking a brave step towards your own business. Your skills and network are valuable, and it seems like they could lead to great opportunities for you outside of your current position. Trusting your instincts and making a change for your mental health is so important. Good luck with your new venture! You’ve got this!
