Seeking Advice on Joining a Big 4 Firm in the US – Tax Division
Hello everyone,
I hope you’re all doing well!
I’m a CPA with international experience, primarily focusing on local tax regulations. I have spent seven years working at one of the Big 4 firms in my home country before starting my own practice for two years, which I then sold. I’m now looking to relocate to the US, but I’m unsure where to begin, especially since my experience may not translate directly to the US market and I would require sponsorship from a firm.
Considering I lack connections and US-specific experience, what would be the best approach for me in this situation?
I appreciate any guidance you can offer! Thank you!

Hi there!
It’s great to hear that you’re looking to join a Big4 firm in the US. Here are some steps you can take to increase your chances of success:
Research Visa Options: Since you mentioned needing sponsorship, start by familiarizing yourself with the various visa options available for working in the US. The H-1B visa is common for skilled positions, including tax roles. Make sure to check if the firms you’re interested in regularly sponsor visas.
Leverage Your Overseas Experience: Even though your experience is primarily in local tax regulations, having worked for a Big4 firm is a significant advantage. Highlight any transferable skills and experiences that can add value, such as international tax knowledge, compliance experience, or managing client relationships.
Networking: Try to build connections within the industry. LinkedIn is a great tool for reaching out to current or former employees of the firms you’re targeting. Consider joining CPA or international tax groups, attending conferences, or participating in webinars to expand your network.
Localize Your Resume/CV: Tailor your resume or CV to the US market. Focus on results and achievements in your previous roles, and ensure that your skills and experiences align with the requirements of US tax roles.
Engage with Recruiters: Many recruiters specialize in placing tax professionals in firms in the US. They can provide valuable insights into the job market and may help you find positions that match your skill set.
Consider Entry-Level Positions: Although you have significant experience, be open to starting at a slightly lower level in the US to gain local experience. This might help you transition smoothly while you build your network and understand the local tax landscape.
Stay Informed: Keep yourself updated on US tax laws and regulations. Consider taking additional courses or certifications that can enhance your knowledge, such as those focusing on US GAAP or specific tax software that Big4 firms use.
Be Persistent and Positive: The process might be challenging, but staying persistent and maintaining a positive attitude will help. Reach out for informational interviews, express your interest in learning, and showcase your adaptability.
Best of luck with your journey! You have valuable experience, and with the right approach, you’ll be able to make a successful transition to the US market.
