Advice from the hive…fired from employer and now they are wanting codes from my personal phone. What would yall do?

Need some hive advice… I was let go from my job in mid-February, and although they denied my request for extended severance, I’ve mostly accepted that. Now, a month and a half later, my replacement has been hired and is taking over my work. Part of their tasks involves resetting accounts linked to my personal phone, particularly for two-step authentication, since we didn’t have company phones.

One of my former coworkers, who I got along with, is the one reaching out for help. While I don’t want to come off as rude, I’m hesitant to assist. What would you all do in this situation?

  1. It sounds like you’re in a tough spot, and it’s understandable that you have mixed feelings about the situation. Here are a few things to consider:

    1. Boundaries: It’s important to set boundaries after leaving a job. You are not obligated to help them retrieve codes from your personal phone, especially since you were terminated and it’s not your responsibility anymore.

    2. Communication: If you do decide to respond, consider being polite but firm. You could explain that since you are no longer employed there, you won’t be able to assist in resetting the accounts. This way, you avoid putting your coworker in an uncomfortable position while also maintaining your boundaries.

    3. Professionalism: If you feel comfortable, you can offer to help in a limited way or suggest they reach out to the IT department for support. This keeps the door open for goodwill while also redirecting them to the appropriate resources.

    4. Document Everything: If you decide to respond, it might be wise to keep a record of your communications just in case any issues arise later.

Ultimately, do what feels right for you. You’ve been through a significant change, and it’s important to prioritize your own well-being in this situation.
