Advice for soon to be grad

Advice for Upcoming Graduates

Hi everyone,

I’m excited to share that I’ll be graduating next month with a Bachelor’s degree in Business. I’m keen on pursuing a career in Accounting, but I recognize that my journey would be smoother with an Accounting degree instead of a general business one. Over the past four years, I worked full-time at a trampoline park, gradually advancing to the role of assistant manager in my final year and a half. More recently, I’ve spent the last year employed at a bank, where I’ve developed essential Bookkeeping, financial, and analytical skills.

Given my background, I would greatly appreciate any advice on how to improve my chances of landing an entry-level Accounting position. I’m sure many of you have faced similar situations, and I’m eager to hear your tips and insights. Thank you!

  1. Congratulations on your upcoming graduation! It sounds like you’ve gained valuable experience that can definitely help you transition into Accounting. Here are some steps you can take to optimize your chances of landing an entry-level Accounting role:

    1. Tailor Your Resume: Highlight your relevant skills and experiences. Emphasize your Bookkeeping, financial, and analytical skills from both your time at the trampoline park and the bank. Make sure to include any relevant coursework in Accounting or finance as well.

    2. Networking: Reach out to professors, classmates, and professionals in the accounting field. Attend networking events, local accounting association meetings, and job fairs. Connecting with people in the industry can lead to job opportunities and valuable advice.

    3. Pursue Certifications: Consider obtaining relevant certifications, like the Certified Bookkeeper (CB) or even starting towards your Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credential if that’s something you’re interested in. These can enhance your resume and show your dedication to the field.

    4. Utilize Online Resources: Websites like LinkedIn, Indeed, and Glassdoor can help you research companies and find entry-level accounting positions. Tailor your applications to each role by using keywords from the job descriptions.

    5. Internships: If you have the flexibility, look for internship opportunities in accounting. Internships can provide you with practical experience and help build your professional network.

    6. Prepare for Interviews: Familiarize yourself with common accounting interview questions, such as those about accounting principles, financial statements, and basic Bookkeeping tasks. Be ready to discuss your relevant experiences and how they relate to the job.

    7. Stay Current: Keep yourself updated on accounting trends and changes in regulations (like GAAP). This shows potential employers that you are invested in your professional development.

    8. Soft Skills Matter: Don’t underestimate the importance of communication and teamwork skills. Be prepared to discuss examples of how you’ve used these skills in your work experience.

    9. Persistence: The job market can be competitive. Don’t get discouraged by rejections; keep applying and improving your skills.

Good luck! Your work experience combined with your business degree gives you a solid foundation to succeed in accounting.
