Accounting Resume

Accounting Resume Help Needed

Hello everyone! I’m looking to transition out of public Accounting in October after nearly two years in the field, as I’ve discovered some job opportunities that seem like a better fit for me. However, I’m unsure how to create an effective resume for Accounting roles (or resumes in general). I would greatly appreciate any tips on formatting, what to include, and what to leave out. Thank you!

  1. Hi there! It’s great that you’re exploring new opportunities in your Accounting career. Here are some tips to help you create a strong resume tailored for Accounting jobs:

    Formatting

    1. Keep it Simple: Use a clean, professional format. Stick to one or two pages max, using clear headings and bullet points.
    2. Use a Professional Font: Opt for fonts like Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman. Keep font size between 10-12 points.
    3. Consistent Layout: Ensure that your spacing, margins, and font sizes are consistent throughout the document.

    What to Include

    1. Contact Information: Your name, phone number, email address, and LinkedIn profile (if applicable) should be at the top.
    2. Professional Summary: A brief summary (2-3 sentences) at the beginning that highlights your experience and what you’re looking for in your next role.
    3. Work Experience:
    4. List your roles in reverse chronological order (most recent first).
    5. Include the company name, your title, and dates of employment.
    6. Use bullet points to describe your key responsibilities and achievements. Focus on quantifiable results (e.g., “Managed a portfolio of 15 clients, ensuring accurate financial reporting and compliance”).
    7. Education: List your degree(s), major, university, and graduation date. Include certifications like CPA if you have them.
    8. Skills: Highlight relevant skills that are important for the job (e.g., proficiency in Accounting Software like QuickBooks, Excel expertise, tax preparation skills).
    9. Professional Affiliations: Mention memberships in relevant organizations (like the AICPA) if applicable.
    10. Technical Skills: If relevant, you can also include software and technical skills you are proficient in.

    What to Exclude

    1. Irrelevant Work Experience: If you have jobs that aren’t applicable to accounting, consider leaving them out to keep your resume focused.
    2. Objective Statements: Instead of a generic objective, use a professional summary that showcases your strengths.
    3. Excessive Personal Information: Don’t include details like marital status, age, or photos. Just keep it professional.
    4. Hobbies and Interests: Unless they directly relate to the position or demonstrate skills relevant to the job, they can usually be omitted.

    Additional Tips

    • Tailor Your Resume: Customize your resume for each job application. Highlight the skills and experiences that are most relevant to the specific position.
    • Use Action Verbs: Start each bullet point with strong action verbs (e.g., “Analyzed,” “Developed,” “Implemented”).
    • Proofread: Ensure there are no spelling or grammatical errors. Consider having someone else review it too.
    • Consider a Cover Letter: A cover letter can complement your resume by allowing you to explain your transition from public accounting and why you’re interested in the new position.

Good luck with your job search! If you need specific help with content or structure, feel free to ask!
