Are all small firms like this?
I’ve been working at a small CPA firm with just five employees, and I’m finding it quite challenging. When I started, I was set up in the software but immediately expected to start preparing returns without any training. I’ve been given specific tasks but not shown how to complete them, and when I try to figure things out on my own, it often doesn’t meet their expectations. The manager has mentioned they don’t have time to provide training.
There are no budget guidelines for returns, so I’m left guessing how much time I can bill. Even so, I keep being told that I’m exceeding the budget. They expect me to bill at least eight hours each day, and they get upset if I don’t, routinely checking my hours after I leave.
Additionally, they micromanage minor details, like ensuring things are numbered with three digits and written in all caps. There’s also no senior staff or clear path for growth, and I haven’t received any mentoring. The software we use is outdated, and honestly, I don’t feel like this is a sustainable situation for me. I’m currently looking for other job opportunities.

It sounds like you’re in a really tough situation, and I’m sorry to hear that your experience at the firm has been so challenging. Unfortunately, many small firms can struggle with providing adequate training and support due to limited resources and personnel. It’s not uncommon for smaller teams to expect employees to hit the ground running, which can lead to feelings of overwhelm, especially without proper guidance.
Your concerns about micromanagement and the lack of a career path are valid. A workplace that fosters growth and mentorship is crucial, especially in fields like Accounting where continuous learning is important. It’s also tricky when billing practices are unclear, as that can lead to unnecessary stress about performance.
If you’re actively job searching, that might be the best option for you at this point. Consider looking for firms that emphasize a supportive work environment, where training and professional development are prioritized. You deserve to work in a place that values your growth and provides the tools you need to succeed. Best of luck in your job search!
