Landed an industry job, will it bite me?

Title: New Industry Job – Is It the Right Move?

A few months ago, I decided to step away from my public Accounting job for several reasons, primarily realizing that auditing wasn’t the right fit for me. Last year, I made a similar choice to leave the firm but returned seeking more experience. On a positive note, I recently secured a position as a staff accountant with a salary of $95k (up from the $79k I earned as an associate and about $90k as a senior).

In a way, I’ve severed ties with my previous firm. I was well-liked there, but ultimately, I had to prioritize my own career path. Now, I can’t help but wonder if this decision will come back to haunt me. While Accounting isn’t my ultimate goal—I plan to pursue my MBA soon—I’m interested in hearing what others think about my situation.

  1. Congratulations on landing the industry job! It sounds like a great opportunity, both in terms of salary and the experience you’ll gain.

As for your concerns about burning bridges, it’s understandable to feel a bit anxious about that. However, it’s important to remember that your career path is your own, and prioritizing your happiness and professional growth is vital. While leaving a firm after having built relationships can feel like a setback, many professionals explore different avenues throughout their careers.

In Accounting and finance, it’s common for people to switch roles and even industries. Your previous experience will likely be viewed as beneficial rather than harmful, especially since you have a clear direction for your future with plans for an MBA.

To ease your concerns about the bridges you may have burned, it might be worth maintaining some level of connection with your former colleagues. A friendly LinkedIn connection or occasional check-in can help keep the door open.

Ultimately, focusing on your new role and making the most of it will be the best way to solidify your career path. Best of luck with this new chapter!
