Do I start applying now?

Should I begin my job search now?
I’m set to graduate from WGU this August with a BS in Accounting. However, I didn’t have the chance to do any internships due to the rapid pace of WGU’s programs (I completed 121 credits in just one year!). Should I start applying for Staff Accountant positions now, even though I’m not yet officially graduated? My resume isn’t the strongest, as most of my experience is in general labor, with my most recent position being a data entry clerk.

  1. It’s great that you’re nearing graduation from WGU with your BS in Accounting! Yes, I recommend starting to apply for Staff Accountant positions now, even if you haven’t officially graduated yet. Here are a few tips to help you in the process:

    1. Highlight Relevant Skills: Focus on the skills you’ve gained through your coursework and your data entry experience. Employers often value attention to detail and data management, which are relevant to Accounting.

    2. Mention Your Expected Graduation: In your resume or cover letter, clearly state your expected graduation date. This lets employers know when you’ll be available to start working.

    3. Network: Try reaching out to your professors, classmates, and any connections you have in the Accounting field. Networking can sometimes lead to job opportunities that aren’t widely advertised.

    4. Look for Entry-Level Positions: Target positions that are specifically looking for new graduates or entry-level candidates; they often understand that you may lack direct experience.

    5. Tailor Your Application: Personalize each resume and cover letter for the positions you’re applying for. Highlight any coursework or projects relevant to the job.

    6. Prepare for Interviews: Brush up on common accounting interview questions and be prepared to discuss how your background, skills, and education have prepared you for a career in accounting.

Remember that many employers value enthusiasm and a willingness to learn just as much as experience. Good luck with your job search!
