How Flexible Are Accounting Jobs?
Hello! I’m a self-employed musician who has been fortunate enough to earn a good living through my passion for music. As I approach my 30th birthday this year, I’m contemplating going back to school to pursue a more traditional and stable long-term career. I’ve always been drawn to the business, math, and finance aspects of my work, so Accounting seems like a natural fit for my skills developed in the music industry.
My main question is this: I’d love to continue my music career even while starting a new job. Most of my gigs are during evenings and weekends, which typically doesn’t clash with a standard 9-5 schedule. However, there are times when I have weddings or out-of-town performances that require some afternoon flexibility.
I understand that every role can differ significantly, but generally speaking, do Accounting jobs tend to offer flexibility for those looking to maintain a side career in music?
I’m enjoying the learning process about this field and am excited to delve deeper, so any insights you can share would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there! It’s great to hear that you’re considering a shift towards Accounting while still pursuing your passion for music.
In general, Accounting jobs can vary widely in terms of flexibility. Many smaller firms and freelance opportunities may offer the kind of schedule that allows you to balance your music commitments, especially if you’re managing your own client base or working for a company that values work-life balance.
Some positions, like those in public Accounting or during tax season, can be more demanding and may require more rigid hours. However, roles in corporate accounting, finance, or even internal auditing often have more flexibility, especially if you’re able to negotiate with your employer about your schedule or work hours.
With that said, remote work opportunities in accounting have expanded significantly, especially since the pandemic. This could allow you to manage your schedule around your gigs more effectively.
In short, while some accounting jobs may require strict hours, there are plenty of avenues you can explore that would give you the flexibility to continue making music. It might even be worthwhile to look into part-time accounting roles or freelance opportunities while you transition. Good luck with your exciting journey into accounting!
