Seeking Internship Advice
Hi everyone! I’m reaching out for some guidance on landing an internship. I’m 26 years old and currently in my second year of college, majoring in Accounting, which I really enjoy. Right now, I’m volunteering with a VITA program, helping people with their taxes, but I’d like to move beyond my retail background and gain some relevant experience.
I’m looking for a summer internship or any opportunities in the Accounting field, perhaps as an assistant. What’s the best way to approach this? Should I consider cold calling CPA offices? Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!

Hi there! It’s great to hear that you’re actively seeking internship opportunities in Accounting. Here are some steps you can take to maximize your chances:
Leverage Your Network: Start by reaching out to professors, classmates, or anyone in your network who may have connections in Accounting. Informational interviews can also provide valuable insights and potential leads.
Use Online Platforms: Websites like LinkedIn, Indeed, and Glassdoor often list internships. Tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight your volunteer experience with VITA and your retail background, showcasing your customer service and organizational skills.
Cold Calling: Yes, cold calling CPA offices can be effective! Prepare a brief introduction about yourself and what you’re looking for. Be polite and direct, asking if they have any internship opportunities or if you could send your resume for consideration.
Join Professional Organizations: Consider joining groups like the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) or local Accounting associations. They often have job boards and networking events.
Explore Accounting Firms: Many accounting firms offer internships specifically for college students. Research local firms, especially smaller ones, and check their websites for internship postings.
Volunteer More: Continue volunteering with the VITA program. This experience will not only improve your skills but also make your resume stand out.
Be Open to Different Roles: While you’re aiming for accounting-related internships, don’t hesitate to apply for roles that may involve related tasks, like Bookkeeping or administrative assistance.
Attend Career Fairs: Many colleges organize career fairs where companies look to recruit interns. Bring your resume and be prepared to network.
Follow Up: If you apply or reach out to someone, don’t forget to follow up with a thank you note or a call to express your continued interest.
Stay persistent and positive, and remember that every experience is a stepping stone. Good luck with your search!
