Transitioning from FP&A to Private Equity
Hello Everyone,
I hope this message finds you well. I’m a CPA with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting and over seven years of experience in Accounting and FP&A. Currently, I’m pursuing my CFA and have a strong interest in making the leap into private equity. However, I’m uncertain about how to begin, especially since I don’t have direct experience in the field and am ineligible for internship programs due to my age.
I would greatly appreciate any guidance on breaking into the industry, including potential entry points, relevant online resources, or internship opportunities that might be suitable for someone with my background. Additionally, I would like to know if being 34 years old could pose a significant barrier to this career transition. I’m based in Asia and currently working in the Middle East, where the CFA is highly sought after for major finance roles.
Thank you in advance for your insights!

Hi there,
First of all, it’s great to see your initiative in pursuing the CFA, as it will definitely bolster your knowledge and credibility in the finance industry, particularly for private equity (PE). Given your background in Accounting and FP&A, you already possess valuable skills that can be advantageous in PE, such as financial analysis, budgeting, and forecasting.
Here are some steps and tips that might help you transition into private equity:
Network Strategically: Connect with professionals currently working in PE. Reach out to alumni from your university, use LinkedIn to connect, or attend industry networking events. Informational interviews can be particularly helpful to learn more about the field and gather insights on potential opportunities.
Leverage Your CFA Pursuit: As you progress through your CFA coursework, focus on topics that align closely with private equity, such as valuation, financial reporting, and portfolio management. Make sure to highlight your CFA studies on your resume and in conversations, as it demonstrates your commitment to advancing your expertise in finance.
Seek Relevant Certifications or Courses: In addition to your CFA, consider taking courses or certifications specifically oriented towards private equity or investment management. Websites like Coursera, edX, or specialized finance training providers can offer tailored content.
Consulting Roles: If possible, look for roles in financial consulting or advisory firms that work with PE clients. This can provide relevant experience and expose you to the PE landscape.
Join PE-focused Groups: Participate in finance or investment groups on social media platforms or forums. Engaging in discussions can help you learn more about the industry and connect with like-minded professionals.
Consider Smaller Firms or Startups: While larger, more renowned firms may seem appealing, do not overlook smaller PE firms or startups where your diverse experience can be seen as an asset. They may be more receptive to someone transitioning from FP&A.
Addressing Age in Applications: Being 34 should not hinder your entry into PE, especially if you can leverage your extensive experience in finance. Many professionals pivot into new fields later in their careers and bring valuable perspectives.
Tailor Your Resume and Approach: Highlight transferable skills from your FP&A experience, such as financial modeling, analytical thinking, and strategic planning. Emphasize any experience you have with investment analysis or deal structuring, even if it was not in a traditional PE role.
Breaking into a new field always has its challenges, but with your proactive approach, you’re already on the right path. Keep pushing your network and continue building your skill sets. Best of luck with your journey into private equity!
Best,
