As a political science student, could I take a minor in accounting and then use it to pivot into a masters program to change career paths from law.

As a political science student, I’m considering the possibility of minoring in Accounting and later pursuing a master’s degree in that field to shift my career focus away from law. I’m feeling uncertain about my job prospects and how this transition might work out. Lately, I’ve been questioning whether a career in law is the right path for me, as it seems like it could lead to compromising my values just to achieve a comfortable lifestyle. Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated!

  1. It’s definitely possible to pivot from a political science background to Accounting, especially if you’re considering a minor in the subject. Having a solid foundation in Accounting could open doors to various career paths, including positions in finance, auditing, tax, and corporate Accounting, or even roles that combine your interests in both fields, like financial consulting for nonprofits or government organizations.

When it comes to a master’s program, many graduate programs in accounting accept students with diverse academic backgrounds, so your political science degree and accounting minor could make you a strong candidate, especially if you demonstrate interest and aptitude in the subject through your coursework and experiences.

Regarding job prospects, accounting generally offers strong job security and opportunities for advancement, especially with certifications (like CPA) which can enhance your employability. The demand for skilled accountants tends to remain steady even during economic downturns, which can provide greater peace of mind compared to the more fluctuating legal field.

Ultimately, consider your interests and what aspects of a career truly resonate with you. It’s great that you’re reflecting on your career goals now. Researching potential career paths, speaking with professionals in accounting, and possibly gaining relevant internships could help clarify your direction moving forward.
