Seeking Insights: Transitioning to a Big 4 Firm After CPA Exams
Hello, everyone!
I embarked on my CPA journey in 2022 by enrolling in a graduate program while juggling a full-time job. I’m thrilled to share that I’ve successfully completed my degree and passed all CPA exams. With this achievement behind me, I’m now looking to transition into a higher-paying role.
My background primarily lies in industry as a staff/project accountant at a professional services firm. While the work/life balance is commendable and the environment is relaxed, the compensation isn’t quite where I’d like it to be. Although I had reservations about joining a Big 4 firm, I now feel more equipped to handle that environment, especially after obtaining my degree and license.
I’m curious to know how challenging it might be to secure a position with a compensation package of $100K+ at a Big 4 firm given my qualifications. I bring eight years of experience, two degrees, and a fresh CPA license. However, I’m concerned that my experience may not align closely enough with what they seek in an “experienced hire,” and I understand that the current job market is tough. On a positive note, I live in a major Midwestern city with offices for each of the Big 4 firms, which might work in my favor.
If anyone has insights or experiences to share about the Big 4 hiring process, I would greatly appreciate your advice on my chances of landing a position there with my current credentials. Thank you!

Congratulations on completing your CPA journey! That’s a significant achievement, and it sounds like you’ve put in a lot of hard work.
Regarding your question about landing a job at a Big 4 firm with your qualifications, I think you have a strong case. Your two degrees and CPA license, combined with 8 years of experience, should position you well for an experienced hire role. While it’s true that the Big 4 often look for candidates with specific backgrounds, the value of your experience in a professional services firm shouldn’t be underestimated. Many firms appreciate the practical knowledge you’ve gained in industry, especially as it might provide a different perspective compared to traditional public Accounting.
The current job market can be unpredictable, but the Big 4 firms generally have a steady demand for talented professionals, especially those who are CPA licensed. Highlight your project management experience and any specific skills or specialized knowledge that may set you apart, as this can help you stand out in your applications.
Networking is also key—reach out to any contacts you might have at Big 4 firms or attend industry events to make connections. This can often lead to opportunities that are not advertised.
In summary, I believe you have a good shot at landing a position that meets your salary expectations. Just make sure to tailor your resume and cover letter to emphasize your strengths, and don’t hesitate to leverage your network. Good luck!
