Seeking Guidance
(Reposting due to the removal of my original post)
I’ve encountered setbacks in both the CA Foundation and CA Intermediate exams. I finally cleared the CA Foundation in December 2022 after three attempts. Since then, I’ve also completed my BAF degree from a college affiliated with Mumbai University.
Unfortunately, I’ve faced two failures in the CA Intermediate, and it’s left me questioning whether pursuing a CA is worthwhile, especially given the multiple attempts I’ve made.
From what I’ve observed on LinkedIn and among my peers, it seems that only those who are rank holders or who pass on their first try are given preference for articleships or industrial training in reputable firms or companies.
I’m concerned that even if I manage to clear the CA Intermediate now, I might end up settling for a less desirable articleship with a low stipend. Additionally, if I eventually become a CA, I fear that my articleship experience will be judged unfavorably when I apply for jobs. I’m worried that, even as a CA, the positions available to me may not be lucrative by industry standards.
I’d greatly appreciate advice from CAs or those currently undergoing their articleship. Thank you! 🙏🏻

First of all, it’s important to acknowledge how you’re feeling. Facing setbacks can be incredibly discouraging, especially in a challenging field like Chartered Accountancy. It’s perfectly normal to question your path after experiencing multiple attempts and feeling the pressure of competition.
Here are some points to consider:
Persistence is Key: Many successful CAs have faced similar struggles. The journey to becoming a CA can be long and fraught with challenges, but many find that persistence and resilience set them apart. Your experience can make you more determined and better prepared for the journey ahead.
Value of Experience: While it’s true that some firms might prefer candidates who pass all exams in the first attempt, many also value practical experience, determination, and the ability to learn from failures. Your experience in failing and trying again can provide you with a unique perspective that you can bring to your articleship and future career.
Networking: Don’t underestimate the power of networking. Connect with professionals in your field, join CA forums, or seek guidance from CAs who have faced similar challenges. Building relationships can open doors to opportunities that you might not find solely based on exam performance.
Focus on Skills: During this time, focus on developing your skills through internships, workshops, and online courses. This not only enhances your resume but also builds your confidence. Employers often look for candidates who are proactive in their professional development.
Seek Mentorship: Finding a mentor can be incredibly beneficial. They can provide guidance, share their experiences, and help you navigate the challenges you’re facing. This support can offer you perspective and encouragement.
Broaden Your Horizon: Consider looking for articleships in different areas of Accounting or finance that you may not have initially thought of. Smaller firms or startups can offer rich learning experiences and the chance to work closely with clients, which can be invaluable.
Stay Positive and Focused: It’s easy to feel overshadowed by the successes of others, but remember that everyone’s journey is unique. Stay focused on your goals and remind yourself of why you wanted to pursue CA in the first place.
In conclusion, don’t underestimate the potential impact your unique journey can have on your future career. Embrace the challenges as part of your learning experience, and keep pushing forward. It’s important to believe in yourself and your capabilities. You’ve already shown great resilience by continuing on your path—keep going! You never know where your hard work might lead you.
