Subject: Overlap Between SBL and APM?
Hello! I’ve heard that there is some overlap in the theory between the SBL and APM syllabi for the exam. Can anyone clarify how significant that overlap really is?
I’m currently contemplating whether to choose APM or AFM and was considering taking one of those option papers alongside SBL. If there’s a substantial overlap between APM and SBL, I think it could save me some study time.
I would really appreciate any insights or advice on this. Thanks in advance! 🙂

Hi there!
You’re right that many candidates notice some overlap between the Strategic Business Leadership (SBL) and Advanced Performance Management (APM) syllabi. Both papers focus on strategic decision-making and performance evaluation, which means concepts related to risk management, performance measurement, and strategy implementation can be relevant to both.
However, it’s essential to remember that SBL is more comprehensive and covers a broader range of topics, emphasizing leadership, professional skills, and real-world case studies. APM, on the other hand, dives deeper into performance management techniques, advanced budgeting, and the strategic use of management information.
If you’re aiming for efficiency, studying for both could be advantageous since concepts from SBL might reinforce your understanding of APM topics, especially in strategic context. That said, ensure you also allocate time to focus on the specific requirements and techniques covered in APM.
Ultimately, your decision might depend on where you see your future career heading. If you’re more inclined towards a strategic leadership role, SBL paired with APM might be a strong combination. If budgeting and performance metrics appeal to you more, then APM could be the better choice.
Good luck with your studies, and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask!
