Tax Prep Job With Just CPE

Tax Preparation Job with Only CPE Credits

I have a somewhat unconventional question, and I hope it doesn’t come off as naive. I’m looking to make a career change, but I know that going back to school takes time, and I’d prefer to transition sooner rather than later. My question is: Is it feasible to land a tax preparation job with just CPE credits and no formal Accounting degree? My highest level of education is an Associate degree in Business Administration.

  1. It’s not a naive question at all! Transitioning careers can be challenging, but it’s definitely possible to find a tax prep job with just CPE credits and an Associate’s degree in Business Administration. Many tax preparation firms, especially during tax season, hire individuals who have completed CPE courses, as they demonstrate a commitment to learning and staying current in the field.

However, here are a few considerations:

    1. Certification and Credentials: While CPE credits are valuable, consider seeking an entry-level certification like the IRS’s Annual Filing Season Program (AFSP). This can enhance your credibility and show potential employers your commitment to the profession.

    2. Experience: Volunteering for tax preparation programs (like VITA or TCE) can provide you with hands-on experience and give you a reference for future jobs.

    3. Networking: Connect with professional organizations, local Accounting groups, or even LinkedIn to meet people in the industry. Networking can often lead to job opportunities.

    4. Job Search: Check job postings for tax preparers and look for those that specify minimal qualifications. Some smaller firms may be more open to hiring candidates without a formal degree.

    5. Highlight Transferable Skills: Leverage the skills from your Associate’s degree in Business Administration, such as organizational skills, attention to detail, and customer service. These can be valuable in a tax prep role.

While it may be a bit challenging, your proactive approach and willingness to learn can certainly open doors. Good luck with your career transition!
