Finance in Portugal

finance in Portugal

I’m excited to share that I’ve been accepted into Nova SBE for my master’s! I have a few questions and would greatly appreciate any insights from the community:

1) What is the job market like in Portugal, and what salary ranges should I expect upon graduation? Additionally, how does salary progression typically look in this field?
2) I’m from Malaysia, so I’m not a European citizen and I don’t speak Portuguese yet, but I’m eager to learn. Do you think the language barrier will impact my job prospects?
3) How feasible is it to transition from Portugal to other markets such as London, France, Germany, or Switzerland after graduating from Nova or gaining a few years of experience in Portugal?
4) Any other tips or insights you have would be a huge help! Thank you!

  1. Congratulations on getting accepted into Nova SBE! Here are some insights to help address your questions:

    1. Hiring and Salary Range: The finance job market in Portugal has been growing, particularly in sectors like banking, fintech, and consulting. Graduates from Nova SBE tend to be well-regarded, which can improve your hiring prospects. Entry-level salaries in finance typically range from €25,000 to €35,000 per year, depending on the specific role and industry. Salary progression can vary, but with a few years of experience, you could expect to see salaries rise to €40,000 to €60,000 or more in roles like investment banking or financial analysis.

    2. Language Barrier: While many companies in Portugal, especially in the finance sector, conduct business in English, knowing Portuguese can significantly enhance your job prospects and integration into the local culture. Many employers prefer candidates who can speak the local language, particularly for client-facing roles. Learning Portuguese will not only improve your chances but will also enrich your overall experience in Portugal.

    3. Pivoting to Other Markets: Many graduates from Nova SBE successfully transition to other European markets. The international reputation of the school can help you secure opportunities abroad, particularly in cosmopolitan centers like London or Frankfurt. Networking during your studies and gaining relevant experience in Portugal will be advantageous. However, having proficiency in the local language of your target market (like German in Germany or French in France) can improve your competitiveness.

    4. Additional Insights: Take advantage of networking opportunities while studying—join clubs, attend events, and connect with alumni. Engage with the local financial community and seek internships during your studies. This experience can be invaluable and may lead to full-time job offers post-graduation. Also, don’t underestimate the cultural aspect of working in Portugal; understanding local business practices and etiquette will help you stand out.

Best of luck with your studies and future career in finance!
