Is this okay? Finance career in Europe

Considering a finance Career in Europe: Need Your Thoughts

Hi everyone,

I have some thoughts I’d like to share. I’m about to complete my Bachelor’s degree in aviation, but honestly, I don’t see a lucrative future in that field, despite its potential for interest.

finance was my original plan, but I wasn’t particularly passionate about it at the time. However, I’m now contemplating a pivot toward finance. I’m almost 23 years old, and if I switch, I’d likely pursue a second Bachelor’s degree in finance at my hometown university, with the goal of achieving top grades and participating in Erasmus programs.

From there, I’d aim to apply for Master’s programs at targeted schools in Germany (where tuition is free for me) or the UK. This would put me at around 28 or 29 years old upon graduation, hopefully with some work experience in banking or at a Big 4 firm along the way.

I plan to target finance positions in Frankfurt with the expectation of landing an entry-level role at a salary of €50,000 or more.

Here are my questions:
1. Does age matter in this field?
2. Will it raise eyebrows that I’m transitioning from aviation to finance?
3. How do my chances look for roles in private equity or investment banking?

Thanks for your input!

  1. Making a career switch can definitely be a daunting decision, but it sounds like you’ve thought this through thoroughly. Here are my thoughts on your questions:

    1. Does age matter here?
Age is generally less of a concern in the finance industry, especially if you frame your story well. Many professionals pivot to different fields later in their careers, and your diverse background in aviation can provide unique perspectives. Being 28 or 29 when you graduate is not uncommon in graduate programs, especially for those who have taken time to explore different interests or gain work experience.

    2. Will people care that I pivot from one field to another?
As long as you can articulate your motivations for switching to finance and how your past experiences can add value, employers are usually open to candidates from different backgrounds. Highlighting transferable skills—such as analytical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork—can help make your case. It’s all about how you present your narrative and demonstrate your commitment to the finance field.

    3. Would my chances at Private Equity/Investment Banking be pretty high still?
Your chances can still be strong, especially if you perform well academically and gain relevant internships or work experience. Target institutions often appreciate diverse backgrounds and unique perspectives that can lead to different ways of thinking and problem-solving. Networking is crucial in finance, so building connections and seeking out mentors in the industry can significantly improve your chances. Additionally, demonstrating a solid understanding of financial principles and showing enthusiasm for the field can help you stand out.

Overall, if you’re passionate about making this transition and are willing to put in the work, you have a good shot at making a successful career switch to finance. Good luck!
