Career Transition

Hello Everyone,

As a CPA with a solid background in tax, I’ve recently been presented with an exciting opportunity to join a startup focused on conducting IT-related audits. In this role, I will be the most senior member with respect to actual Audit responsibilities. I must admit, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed and would greatly appreciate any recommendations for resources or continuing professional education (CPE) that could help me succeed in this new venture. I take my work seriously and will not perform or approve any audits unless I’m fully confident and competent in the areas I’ve been assigned. Thank you in advance for your support!

  1. Hi there!

Congratulations on your new opportunity! Transitioning into IT-related audits can certainly be daunting, but with your CPA background and experience in tax, you already have a strong foundation in regulatory compliance and attention to detail.

Here are some resources that might help you get up to speed:

    1. Professional Certifications: Consider pursuing relevant certifications such as Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) or Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP). These credentials can provide you with the technical knowledge and credibility in the IT Audit field.

    2. Online Courses: Platforms like Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, and Udemy offer courses specifically focused on IT auditing, cybersecurity, and risk management. Look for courses that cover key topics such as IT governance, information security principles, and Audit methodologies.

    3. Books & Guides: There are many excellent books on IT auditing, such as “The IT Audit Book” by Michal C. Smith or “Information Technology Auditing” by Dr. Andrew B. Whitman and Dr. Alissa M. D. Smith. These can offer helpful frameworks and insights into best practices.

    4. Webinars & Workshops: Many professional organizations, such as ISACA and the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), offer webinars and workshops that focus on the latest trends and techniques in IT auditing.

    5. Networking: Engage with professionals in the field through LinkedIn groups or local chapters of professional organizations. Networking can provide you with insights, tips, and mentorship opportunities from those who have successfully transitioned into IT audits.

    6. Join Communities: Consider becoming a member of groups like ISACA, IIA, or the AICPA’s technology committees. These organizations provide a wealth of resources, including articles, whitepapers, and forums to connect with others in the field.

Remember to take your time and build your knowledge base gradually. Your conscientious approach will serve you well as you develop competencies in this new area. Best of luck on your journey, and don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance as you navigate this exciting transition!
