Am I Overdoing It?
Just a little background:
I recently began an internship at a small firm for my articles, and I’m incredibly thankful they took me on, especially since I have no corporate experience (having previously worked in the service sector). Balancing my studies with this role, I honestly didn’t expect anyone to hire me until I had more credentials.
In the short span of less than two months, I’ve accomplished quite a bit:
- Processed bank statements for 5 companies from March 2024 to January 2025.
- Handled bank statements for another 8 companies from October to December, leading up to January.
- Created general journal entries for two companies to rectify errors from previous years’ trial balances.
- Submitted tax reports for two companies.
- Captured invoices for VAT purposes and processed journal entries for cash transactions for one company over a four-month period.
- Completed bank reconciliations and fixed errors in previously processed transactions for 4 companies.
- Managed payroll for one company over two months.
- Made journal entries to correct misallocated transactions.
Since I’m still in my probation period, I can’t help but wonder: Is all this hard work going to pay off, or is what I’m experiencing typical for interns, and am I just being dramatic?
One response
It sounds like you’re doing an impressive amount of work for someone who’s just starting an internship! The fact that you’ve already taken on complex tasks like processing bank statements, tax reports, VAT invoices, bank reconciliations, and payroll shows that you’re not just making the most of the opportunity, but also proving your capability and value to the firm.
It’s completely normal to feel a bit overwhelmed, especially in a new role where you want to make a good impression. Remember, it’s not uncommon for interns to take on a variety of tasks to learn and contribute, but it seems like you’re going above and beyond what many might handle in a short period.
Your hard work and dedication are likely to be noticed, and it’s a good strategy to reach out for feedback from your supervisors to ensure you’re on track and to discuss how to best leverage this experience moving forward. Just make sure you’re also taking care of yourself and not burning out. Balancing ambition with self-care is key! Keep up the great work, and trust that your contributions will pay off in the long run.
