need help in deciding which path to pursue

Seeking Guidance on My Career Path

Hello! I recently passed the December 2024 CPALE and have been working in the government since then. My transition to this position was relatively smooth, possibly due to knowing someone there. The pay is decent, and the work isn’t overly challenging, but the dynamics with my colleagues can make it difficult.

Initially, I had no plans to pursue a career in government, but my parents encouraged me to do so because of the salary. They explained that they wouldn’t be able to support me if I chose to work in Manila, especially since my siblings are also studying and preparing for their own board exams. However, ever since I passed the exams, I’ve felt a strong desire to apply to and work for a BIG4 firm. On the other hand, I worry that pursuing this path may seem selfish; the entry-level salaries there wouldn’t provide me with enough financial support to help my family, and I’d likely face challenges making ends meet.

I also question my competitiveness and capabilities for a role in the BIG4, especially since I’d be venturing into this alone. Still, my heart is set on giving it a shot. I believe that if I try and it doesn’t meet my expectations, then it’s simply not the right fit for me.

I’m reaching out to anyone working in the BIG4 for advice. Is it worth pursuing this path? Will I have any regrets? Am I equipped to handle the demands of such a job? What can I realistically expect if I decide to join a BIG4 firm?

By the way, I’m from a province far from Manila.

Thank you in advance for your insights!

  1. It sounds like you’re navigating a tough decision, and it’s completely normal to feel conflicted. Working in the government provides stability and a good salary, especially given your family’s situation, but your desire to challenge yourself in a BIG4 firm is also valid and important.

Here are a few things to consider as you weigh your options:

    1. Long-term Goals: Think about your career aspirations. If working in a BIG4 firm aligns with your long-term goals, it may be worth pursuing despite the short-term sacrifices. Experiences gained at a BIG4 can open doors in the future, even if the starting pay is lower.

    2. Networking: If you’re concerned about not having a support system in Manila, consider reaching out to any alumni networks or professional groups related to Accounting. They can provide insights, mentorship, and even friend connections that could ease your transition.

    3. Financial Considerations: Crunch the numbers. Look at the total expenses you’ll incur if you move to Manila and how that stacks against the salary you’d earn in the BIG4. If financial strain is likely, consider whether there are part-time jobs or opportunities for side income while you pursue a position at a BIG4 firm.

    4. Work Environment: While the government job might feel comfortable now, think about whether you thrive in environments that are more dynamic and fast-paced, like those in a BIG4. It might be a steep learning curve, but many people find the experience energizing and fulfilling.

    5. Trial and Error: Remember that you can always try it out. Many professionals switch jobs multiple times in their career. If you apply to a BIG4 and get an offer, you can always accept it and see how it goes. If it doesn’t work out, you can always go back to a government job or look elsewhere.

    6. Personal Growth: Lastly, consider the personal growth aspect. Stepping out of your comfort zone can be scary but often rewarding. If you feel that working with a leading firm could help you grow and develop skills, that could be a strong motivator.

Ultimately, the choice should balance your current obligations and your aspirations. Trust your instincts, and remember that most people do find a way to manage these transitions successfully. Good luck!
