Career Switch to Accounting?

Thinking of Switching to Accounting?

I’ve spent the last five years as a property manager but never completed my college degree. I initially planned to finish it online with WGU in Data Analytics, but I’m now contemplating pursuing a BS in Accounting instead. Given my background, I believe I could be a strong candidate for Accounting roles in the real estate sector.

I have a couple of questions: How is the current job market for accounting positions (I’ve heard data analytics isn’t great)? Do employers value a degree from WGU? Also, are remote accounting jobs still available?

  1. It’s great to see you’re considering a career switch, especially with your background in property management!

    1. Job Market in Accounting: The job market for Accounting professionals tends to be more stable compared to other fields like data analytics. While the demand can vary by location, Accounting skills are always needed, especially in sectors like real estate. Many companies are looking for candidates who understand the industry and can bring additional insights, so your property management experience could be a big plus.

    2. Perception of WGU: Employers generally look for a candidate’s skill set and experience over the name of the school. Western Governors University (WGU) is an accredited institution and is gaining recognition for its competency-based learning model. As long as you demonstrate your knowledge and practical skills gained through the program, many employers will be open to hiring you, especially if they value real-world experience.

    3. Remote Accounting Jobs: Remote jobs in accounting are still prevalent, especially since the pandemic accelerated the shift towards flexible work arrangements. Many companies now offer hybrid or fully remote roles, particularly for entry-level and mid-level positions. Just keep in mind that competition can be stiff, so emphasizing your unique background in property management can help you stand out.

Ultimately, if you’re passionate about accounting, pursuing a BS in Accounting could be a great move. It would give you a solid foundation and open up various opportunities in your current field or beyond. Good luck!
