1099 tax help??

1099 Tax Assistance Needed

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working temporarily through the Tempmee app and received a 1099 form. However, I also worked at two offices for just a few days and they paid me via check for each shift.

One of these offices that issued a check is not providing me with any tax documents to report this income. I’m confused because I thought that if you earn over $600, it needs to be reported on your taxes. They’ve informed me that I need to handle this income reporting on my own.

What should I do? Do I not report it if they aren’t providing any documentation? Or could they face an Audit?

  1. It’s great that you’re seeking clarification on your tax situation! Here’s what you need to know:

    1. 1099 vs. W-2: Since you mentioned receiving a 1099, it indicates that you were considered an independent contractor rather than an employee. This means you’re responsible for reporting your income even if you don’t receive a 1099 for every source of income.

    2. Income Reporting: The IRS requires you to report all your income, regardless of whether you receive a 1099 or not. If you received checks from that office, you should keep track of those payments and report them on your tax return.

    3. Documentation: It’s a good practice to keep records of all your earnings, including the amounts you were paid and any correspondence with the offices. That way, you have a paper trail if needed.

    4. Potential for Audit: If the company does not report the payment and you do, it’s unlikely they would get audited solely because you reported your income. The IRS uses various means to ensure accurate reporting, so it’s better to be upfront.

    5. Talk to a Tax Professional: Since tax situations can be complex, especially for independent contractors, it may be wise to consult a tax professional or accountant. They can provide personalized advice and help ensure you’re meeting all your tax obligations correctly.

In summary, yes, you should report all the income you received, even without a tax form from the office. Keeping good records and possibly getting professional advice are your best options.
