Advice for a finance major

Seeking Guidance as a finance Major Transitioning to Accounting

Hello everyone! I’m set to graduate this May with a degree in finance, but I’ve made the decision to pivot towards Accounting. I’ve genuinely enjoyed my Accounting courses during my undergrad and have done quite well in them. To qualify for CPA eligibility, I still need to complete approximately 15-18 additional credits.

I’ve been actively applying for positions on LinkedIn, but I’ve noticed that many entry-level jobs still ask for 1-2 years of experience, making it difficult for me to find success in my applications.

I’m curious if anyone would recommend reaching out to recruiters or hiring managers directly via cold emails? Are firms open to hiring individuals who don’t hold a formal degree in Accounting? Additionally, what strategies can I employ to stand out in my applications?

I would greatly appreciate any advice you could offer! Thank you!

  1. Hi there!

Congratulations on nearing graduation! Transitioning from finance to Accounting can be a great move, especially since you’ve enjoyed your Accounting courses.

    1. Cold Emailing Recruiters/Hiring Managers: Absolutely! Cold emailing can be a useful strategy. Tailor your emails to highlight your relevant skills and coursework and express your enthusiasm for the Accounting field. Make sure to do some research on the company to show genuine interest and understanding of what they do.

    2. Openess to Non-Accounting Degrees: Many firms are open to hiring candidates from diverse educational backgrounds, especially if you can demonstrate your knowledge and passion for accounting. Focus on showcasing your accounting coursework, any relevant projects, and internships or related experience, even if they’re from your finance studies.

    3. Standing Out in Applications:

    4. Networking: Leverage your school’s alumni network, attend career fairs, or join accounting-related professional organizations. Networking can sometimes lead to opportunities that aren’t posted online.
    5. Certifications: Consider enrolling in CPA exam prep classes or obtaining other relevant certifications, like the CFA or CMA, to bolster your resume.
    6. Skill Enhancement: Brush up on Accounting Software (like QuickBooks, Excel, or specific ERP systems) which are often used in firms.
    7. Tailored Resume: Customize your resume to highlight all relevant skills that align with the accounting roles you are targeting.

    8. Internships: If possible, look for internship opportunities in accounting. Even if it’s slightly less prestigious, practical experience can sometimes outweigh a degree in a new field.

    9. Soft Skills: Don’t forget to showcase your soft skills (e.g., attention to detail, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities) in your applications and interviews. These are crucial in accounting roles.

Keep pushing through and remain persistent! The right opportunity will come along. Good luck!
