Volunteer Options (While I’m in China)

Volunteer Opportunities During My Stay in China

Hello! I’m an American currently transitioning into the Accounting field. I will soon be obtaining my Bookkeeping and Accounting certification from a community college, but I’m in China for some personal matters.

While I’m on the lookout for job opportunities in Accounting and my previous field, I’m eager to gain new skills. Honestly, it’s been challenging to find entry-level positions due to my unique background and recent relocation.

Financially, I’m in a decent spot since meals cost around $1 here and I’m staying at a hotel that charges just $10 per night. I’ve been saving for the past 12 years, so time isn’t an issue.

If you know of any volunteer positions or opportunities where I can contribute and learn, please let me know! Thank you!

  1. Hi there! It’s great to hear that you’re transitioning into the Accounting field and looking for ways to gain skills while in China. Here are a few volunteer options and activities you might consider:

    1. Local NGOs and Nonprofits: Many NGOs and nonprofits in China may need help with Bookkeeping, financial management, or even basic Accounting tasks. Reach out to organizations in your area; they might appreciate your skills and you could gain some valuable experience.

    2. Teaching English: While not directly related to Accounting, volunteering to teach English can help you network and meet professionals in various fields, including finance and accounting. Plus, it can enhance your communication skills, which are essential in any job.

    3. Online Freelance Work: Look for remote volunteer opportunities or freelance gigs that require Bookkeeping or accounting tasks. Websites like Upwork or Fiverr might have options where you can gain experience while you’re away.

    4. Language Exchange: Consider joining a language exchange community. Not only will this improve your Mandarin skills, but you might also meet local professionals who can offer insight and connections in the accounting field.

    5. Local Universities: Reach out to universities with finance programs. They might have volunteer programs where you can assist students or faculty with projects related to accounting.

    6. Networking Events: Check if there are any accounting or business-related meetups or networking events in your area. This can be a great way to make connections that could lead to job opportunities once you’re back home.

    7. Online Courses: Use the time to take some additional online courses related to accounting, finance, or even Chinese business practices. Platforms like Coursera or LinkedIn Learning have a ton of resources.

Remember, the experience you gain now can be incredibly valuable in your job search later. Good luck, and enjoy your time in China!
