Title: What is KPMG? Interviewer’s Question of the Day
Today I had the opportunity to interview a candidate for a position. It was just me and the hiring manager, who is about 60 years old.
The candidate had KPMG listed on their resume. When the HR asked, “What is KPMG?”, the candidate hesitated for a moment before responding, “an Accounting firm.”
The hiring manager seemed surprised and commented, “Hmm, they must be small, I’ve never heard of them.”
At first, I thought the candidate was joking, but as the conversation continued, it was clear he was unfamiliar with KPMG. After a brief discussion about the company, we moved on to other topics.
About 15 minutes later, while I was discussing my background, the hiring manager suddenly exclaimed, “OH! You worked at Peat Marwick!!! I didn’t realize that’s KPMG.”
I had to hold back my laughter. How could someone be so unaware of KPMG after all these years?
