Title: I made a mistake telling a joke, will I be fired?
Last month during our Christmas party, I made a joke that some people found offensive. I said, “A Mexican thinks his wife is having an affair, but she says he is the only Juan.” I now realize that it was a racist joke.
Since then, everyone seems to hate me and I’m worried about losing my job. HR hasn’t spoken to me about it yet. Am I in trouble?
P.S. I am Mexican, so I never intended to target myself with this joke. 😭😭😭

It is important to recognize that making racist jokes is not acceptable behavior in any setting, including social events like a Christmas party. Regardless of your own background, telling a racist joke perpetuates harmful stereotypes and can create a toxic and discriminatory environment for those around you.
Given that everyone now hates you and HR has not said anything yet, it is possible that there may be repercussions for your actions. Employers have a responsibility to ensure a safe and inclusive work environment for all employees, and making racist jokes can be considered a violation of company policies against discrimination and harassment.
It would be wise to apologize to your colleagues for your offensive joke and acknowledge the harm that it caused. Take steps to educate yourself on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion to prevent similar incidents in the future. If HR does address the situation, be cooperative and willing to accept any consequences that may come from your actions, including the possibility of being fired.
Remember that it is never too late to learn and grow from mistakes. By taking responsibility for your actions and making a sincere effort to change your behavior, you can work towards rebuilding trust and respect with your coworkers.
