Does anybody else do this?

Does anyone else follow this job application strategy?

  • Apply for positions that list 20-30k under market for the position, despite being overqualified.
  • Receive immediate contact for a phone screen, where they ask about salary expectations.
  • Respond by asking for their budget, only to receive the low number listed.
  • Express concern by stating “Isn’t that too low?” or “Oh no, that is way too low.”

I’ve been employing this tactic periodically and feel the need to provide them with feedback.

One response

  1. It’s not uncommon for candidates to apply for positions that are listed below market value for their qualifications and experience. It can be frustrating to see a job that you know you are overqualified for, but still want to apply for.

When it comes to discussing salary expectations during the interview process, it’s important to be transparent and assertive about your worth. Asking the employer for their budget is a smart move, as it gives you an idea of the range they are working with. However, if they respond with a number that is significantly lower than what you believe you deserve, it’s important to advocate for yourself.

Telling the employer that their offer is too low is a bold move, but it can show that you are confident in your skills and know your worth. It’s important to give them feedback on the salary range to help them understand that they may not be attracting the talent they are looking for with such a low offer.

Overall, it’s important to stand up for yourself and negotiate for a fair salary that reflects your qualifications and experience. Giving constructive feedback to employers about their salary range can help not only you, but also future candidates who may be in a similar position.
