Starting a Freelance Bookkeeping Journey: Insights and Advice Needed
Embarking on the journey of freelance Bookkeeping can be both exciting and daunting, especially for those transitioning from traditional employment to self-employment. My wife has made the courageous decision to step away from working for others after dedicating nearly two decades to the Accounting and Bookkeeping industry. She has gathered a wealth of experience in various roles, including serving as a staff accountant and supervisor of Accounting for a cable company, as well as managing financial operations for a real estate development firm, a construction company, and an auto repair shop. This diverse background positions her well for this new venture.
Currently, she is putting the finishing touches on her business setup. With extensive knowledge of QuickBooks and a commitment to continuous learning, she is in the final stages of completing her certifications through the platform. Her website is nearly live, her resume is polished, and she’s crafted an engagement letter to solidify her services. The next phase of her journey involves reaching out to potential clients.
One crucial point to note is that her practice will not include tax services, nor is she certified as a CPA or EA. Instead, she aims to assist small to mid-sized businesses, particularly newer enterprises, offering a cost-effective solution for their bookkeeping needs. Her skills include managing financial statements, reconciling accounts, and providing insights on cost reduction—all while emphasizing the importance of automation in her processes.
As she prepares to market her services, her initial strategy involves connecting with local CPA firms. We are contemplating the best way to initiate these conversations. Should she reach out via email, make a phone call, or consider a more direct approach like walking in? Additionally, any advice on making a memorable first impression would be invaluable.
We anticipate billing clients hourly and are also open to any strategies or suggestions for acquiring clients and establishing a successful freelance bookkeeping practice. Your insights and experiences would be greatly appreciated as we navigate this new chapter.
