Wasn’t promoted to senior – struggling to see a path forward in this field.

Navigating Career Setbacks in Public Accounting: Finding Your Path Forward

Experiencing a setback in your career can be disheartening, especially when the promotion you hoped for is out of reach. Recently, I faced a challenging situation in my role as an auditor at a top 10 firm, where I was not elevated to a senior position this year. While I understand the rationale behind the decision—my colleagues seem to have a stronger command of their responsibilities than I do—it’s hard not to feel the weight of disappointment.

The auditing profession can be mentally taxing. Despite my commitment, often putting in more than 10 hours a day, I find that the volume of work I complete does not reflect the hours sacrificed. Working 50+ hours per week for around $70,000 annually raises questions about the value of my efforts. The rigorous nature of public Accounting has made me contemplate what my career trajectory might look like if I truly invested myself to progress further in this field.

Compounding my dilemma is the broader industry trend toward tightening promotion criteria and hiring freezes, which seems to be a widespread phenomenon. With the job market for industry positions also showing a lack of opportunities, I find myself at a crossroads. Although I have obtained my CPA license, I recognize that I still lack significant experience that would make me a competitive candidate for future roles, especially at public companies.

This brings me to a pivotal question: Should I endure the current situation, hoping for a breakthrough within the next year or two, or is it time to seek a transition to a different career path? As I reflect on these options, it’s essential to weigh the potential benefits of enduring the grind against the risks of seeking new opportunities that may better align with my skills and aspirations.

Career setbacks, while challenging, can also spur valuable self-reflection. If you’re navigating a similar struggle, consider exploring your strengths, assessing your long-term objectives, and discussing your thoughts with trusted mentors or colleagues. Remember, it’s often the toughest moments that lead us to the most meaningful decisions. Whether choosing to stay put or pivot towards something new, ensure that your choice aligns with your personal and professional goals.
