Finishing my internship soon, should I tell my manager I’m not going back to school?

Navigating Career Decisions: Should I Share My Plans with My Manager?

As I approach the conclusion of my internship, I find myself facing a significant crossroads in my academic and professional journey. Recently graduated and initially set on attending graduate school this fall, I now find myself reevaluating my future. Here’s my story and the dilemma I’m grappling with.

At the outset of my post-college life, the plan was straightforward: I had been accepted into my desired graduate program, eagerly registered for classes, and fully prepared for the associated financial responsibilities. All indicators suggested that I would continue my education seamlessly.

Then came the internship. I secured a valuable spring internship, which I believed would enhance my resume while also aligning with my academic pursuits. However, the ever-evolving job market has prompted me to reconsider my path. With a growing apprehension about potential employment challenges post-graduate school, I’ve made the decision to defer my graduate enrollment for at least a year. Fortunately, my university has permitted this delay, but it has left me with a conundrum – especially since I have a job offer waiting for me in another organization starting this September.

The dilemma deepens because I’ve maintained the facade of attending graduate school, which has turned out to be quite stressful. The only way I could imagine pursuing a Master’s this year would hinge on receiving a return offer from my current internship, but given the limited hiring activity on the team I’m interested in—no new hires in the past two years—the chances of this happening appear slim.

As I reflect on my situation, I grapple with an important question: Should I confide in my manager about my shift in plans regarding graduate school? Furthermore, would it be wise to discuss my interest in prospects on another team, in hopes of securing a return offer there?

This introspection underscores a broader issue many young professionals face: navigating commitments while weighing endless opportunities in a dynamic job market. The decision to be transparent about my future may not only impact my current internship experience but could also shed light on potential paths that align with my skills and aspirations.

As I ponder these questions, it serves as a reminder to others in similar circumstances: being open and honest with your mentors can often lead to unexpected opportunities. After all, as we chart our own paths, engaging in meaningful conversations about our evolving goals may prove invaluable for our careers.
