Navigating Your First Steps in the Accounting Career Post-Graduation
Hello, fellow readers!
Today, I’m excited to share a milestone from my life: I’ve officially graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting! As a recent graduate at 22 years old, I’ve spent the past few years lurking in various online communities, absorbing insights and experiences. Now that I’ve achieved this goal, I’m eager to embark on my professional journey and seeking your valuable advice as I approach my first foray into the workforce.
Planning My Job Search
I plan to start applying for full-time Accounting positions around mid to late June. The slight delay is due to a family vacation where I’ll be reconnecting with relatives I haven’t seen in years. Once I return, my initial focus will be on job opportunities at my local parish in Louisiana, as I have a family connection through my sister who works in the public school system. There’s also the option to pursue upward mobility within my current employer, Walmart, transitioning from the sales floor to an office environment.
I would love your thoughts on this strategy. Given my limited experience—only one interview for an internship and nearly five years at Walmart—do you think it’s wise to apply for all types of accounting positions, including internships, part-time roles, and full-time jobs?
Evaluating My Qualifications
One concern I have is my overall GPA of 3.1, which, admittedly, isn’t stellar. I graduated without honors, lacked any internship experience, and my primary work history revolves around retail. Will this impact my job search? What should I expect in terms of starting salary, and what figures should I consider when negotiating?
Additionally, I’m curious about what I should include in my resume and interviews that can effectively showcase my strengths, given my lack of extracurricular activities and internships. I’ve addressed the basics like education and work experience but want to ensure I stand out.
Tapping Into Opportunities
I’ve heard from professors and in the online community that a bachelor’s degree in accounting can provide a solid foundation for starting in various roles, even if they are not the most desirable positions. My minor in Spanish and the credits I’ve amassed for the CPA exam/license appear to be assets as well. Is this perspective accurate?
I appreciate your patience in reading through my thoughts and questions. This journey is significant to me, and I truly welcome any insights you can offer. If you have additional questions or need more context, feel free to ask!
