My girlfriend graduated from a US university, but will have to move to Canada because of Visa issues, is it true that she would need to re do her bachelor’s in order to be a licensed accountant in Canada?

Navigating Accounting Credentials: A US Graduate’s Move to Canada

When transitioning from one country to another, especially in the field of Accounting, professionals often face a steep learning curve regarding local licensing requirements. This is a challenge my girlfriend is currently navigating.

Having graduated from a prestigious university in the United States, she is now relocating to Montreal due to visa complications—she holds Canadian permanent residency but was unable to secure a work permit in the US. Our research into the Accounting profession in Canada has thrown up some concerning information: it appears that she may need to redo her entire bachelor’s degree at a Canadian institution in order to become a licensed accountant. This seems quite unreasonable, especially considering her impressive background.

My girlfriend has completed the necessary 150 credit hours, accumulated a year of experience at one of the Big Four accounting firms, and successfully finished two CPA exams. The idea that she might need to retake her bachelor’s degree seems excessive and unnecessary given her qualifications.

Is there an alternative pathway for her? We are eager to learn whether there are exams or certifications that recognize her existing knowledge and experience, allowing her to demonstrate her competence without having to repeat her education.

If you have any insights or resources on how accounting credentials from the US are evaluated in Canada, I would greatly appreciate your advice. Understanding the steps she can take to continue her professional journey without redundant hurdles would be invaluable. Thank you for your support!
