I’ve been job hopping every 1-2 years and need advice.

Navigating Job Changes: Seeking Guidance on Career Transitions

As a professional in the tax industry for the past six years, I find myself at a crossroads in my career journey, and I could use some insight from those who have been in similar situations. My extensive history of job hopping—approximately every one to two years—has left my resume looking somewhat less than ideal.

The primary reason for my frequent transitions stems from the adjustments I made during the pandemic, which I viewed as an opportunity to pursue incremental pay increases. Having recently become debt-free, I felt compelled to seek positions that provided more than just a basic living wage. Now, as I approach the two-year mark in my current role, it has been a more stable and comfortable experience, yet I am contemplating a move out of state. This raises concerns about how my past job changes might impact my perceived work ethic and credibility with potential employers.

Interestingly, my current supervisor is keen to help me advance to a partner level. However, I find myself hesitant, particularly considering the high cost of living in my area and the potential sacrifices to time with family that such a role could entail.

As I weigh my options, I am eager to hear thoughts on the best strategy moving forward. Should I begin applying for new positions and trust that employers will understand my unique circumstances, or would it be more prudent to omit certain roles from my resume?

If you’ve faced similar challenges in your career and have successfully navigated them, I would love to hear your advice. How did you turn your experiences into opportunities? Your insights could be invaluable as I consider the next steps in my professional life.
