As someone who recently stepped into a leadership role, I was enthusiastic about hiring a new team member to fill a crucial position after my promotion. After an extensive recruitment process filled with anticipation, we finally brought someone on board who seemed perfect for the job. However, what transpired over the following weeks left me both bewildered and frustrated.

From the outset, the new hire’s behavior was drastically different from what we had seen during the interview process. Despite my efforts to assign work and provide thorough training, they consistently failed to complete any tasks. It felt like a significant setback, especially after investing time and energy into onboarding someone I believed would contribute positively to our team.

To make matters worse, after just six weeks, they resigned. Even as their departure drew closer, I continued to assign them minor responsibilities, hoping for at least some follow-through during their final weeks. Unfortunately, those tasks frequently went unaddressed, further complicating my own workload.

While I’m disappointed that this particular employee was not the right fit, what truly boggles my mind is the apparent lack of professionalism in their approach. As a seasoned adult with years of experience, I would have expected more engagement and effort—particularly in the lead-up to a departure. If I were in their position, I would strive to leave on a positive note, making certain to fulfill my obligations to the best of my ability.
